Assassination Attempt Targets Iranian Opposition Leader in Los Angeles
Foad Pashaei, secretary-general of the Constitutionalist Party of Iran (Liberal Democrat), was seriously injured in an attack at his private residence in Los Angeles on the evening of Monday, August 17, 2026. The assault occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. local time. Pashaei was taken to hospital and admitted to intensive care.
The Constitutionalist Party of Iran, an exile organization that advocates a secular constitutional monarchy and the return of Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi under liberal-democratic institutions, publicly announced the incident. The party stated that the Los Angeles Police Department has opened an investigation and that the inquiry is being expanded with support from the FBI. According to reporting consistent with the party's account, security cameras at the residence were disabled before the assault. Pashaei had reportedly received a warning roughly two weeks earlier that he could be targeted and had been advised to increase personal security measures.
In a contemporaneous discussion of the incident, independent commentator Mayot Husi (2CTV) framed the attack as part of a pattern of regime pressure against Iranian opposition figures abroad. Husi noted that the only groups with both the motive and demonstrated capacity for physical action against those seeking a free Iran are Islamist networks, and he pointed to longstanding concerns about IRGC-linked or jihadi sleeper cells operating outside Iran. He emphasized that definitive attribution of the specific individuals or operational link remains unknown pending the police and FBI investigation. Husi also observed that the willingness of the regime to target even relatively low-profile exile party leaders signals desperation: “Take it as a huge credit that even one political party in exile is such a threat to the regime in Iran that they have to do something like this.”
The attack occurs against a documented history of Iranian transnational repression. U.S. authorities have previously disrupted plots to abduct or kill critics of the Islamic Republic on American soil, and human-rights monitors have recorded hundreds of extraterritorial killings and attempts attributed to Iranian intelligence services over four decades. Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi publicly condemned the assault on Pashaei and directly accused the Islamic Republic of responsibility, citing the regime's long record of targeting opponents beyond its borders. Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi's communications office expressed concern for Pashaei's recovery and called for a thorough, transparent investigation so that those responsible can be identified and brought to justice.
